Lasting Memories - Blacked

Stefany can't believe she's about to marry her fiancé; it feels like a mistake. Her mind keeps drifting back to when he was on his search for the perfect engagement ring, while she was busy cheating on him with another man. She wonders how they managed to get here after all that.

She finds herself sitting at a fancy restaurant, pretending to have an interest in the food he picked out. Her eyes scanning over the menu, but her mind lost in thought. She catches herself daydreaming about the other man's body; his strong arms, his rough hands... How could she do this to her poor fiancé? He deserves better than someone like her.

Across from her, her fiancé attempts to engage in conversation, but she is too distracted by her own thoughts to respond properly. Before they even finish their meals, they're presented with the check. Stefany feels like she's in a haze as they gather their things and make their way out of the restaurant. The night feels like it's dragging on forever, and she just wants to go home.

Once they're in the car, her fiancé reaches over and takes her hand. "Are you okay?" He asks softly, his voice filled with worry. She looks at him, feeling tears well up in her eyes. How could she do this to such a kind-hearted man? She thinks about the times they spent together - the laughter, the love - and it all feels so distant now.

She takes a deep breath and lets out a sigh. "I... I don't think I can marry you," she finally manages to say. The words feel like they're ripping out of her, and she braces herself for the impact.

Her fiancé's face falls, and he pulls his hand back as if he's been slapped. "Why not?" He asks, his voice cracking. She looks away, unable to meet his gaze. She feels like a terrible person but knows she has to be honest with him.

I cheated on you," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. She sees him flinch, and her heart breaks all over again. "I'm so sorry," she manages to say, turning to face him. But even her apology feels hollow now.

He stares at her, his eyes filled with disbelief and hurt. "You what?" He finally manages to say. She nods, unable to find the words to properly explain herself. They sit in silence for a few moments, each lost in their own thoughts.

Finally, her fiancé turns the car around and begins driving back home. The rest of the ride is spent in complete silence, each one lost in their own thoughts. As they pull up to their house, Stefany feels a sense of finality wash over her. She knows this is the end - not just of their relationship, but of her chance at real happiness.
